Ordinals new gameplay: Will "Cursed Inscription" be the next hot spot of Bitcoin NFT?
The Bitcoin NFT protocol Ordinals has been upgraded to version v0.6.0. The most notable update in this version is the support for "cursed inscriptions".
TL;DR
**What is "Cursed Inscription"? **
Some inscriptions that were successfully inscribed were not assigned a serial number by the indexer and could not be retrieved. They were called "cursed inscriptions".
**Why the number of "cursed inscriptions" on the Ordinals official browser and the "cursed inscriptions" browser cursedordinals is different? **
Some "cursed inscriptions" are currently not recognized by the Ordinals agreement. The Ordinals v0.6.0 version still does not support the "Cursed Inscriptions" created using the OP_66 opcode.
**How to check whether my "Curse Inscription" is recognized as valid? **
Go directly to the Ordinals official browser to search for your own "cursed inscription" ID value to retrieve. If it is a "cursed inscription" that is recognized as valid, the search result can already be successfully displayed at this time, and the search result will be assigned a negative serial number value and marked as "unstable".
**Does the "Unbound" status of the OP_66 type "Glyph of the Curse" mean that I lose this glyph? **
All inscriptions stay safely on the Bitcoin network, including OP_66, and no inscriptions that are successfully burned will be lost. If you have OP_66, all you have to do is wait, wait for the Ordinals agreement to change its mind...
What is "Cursed Inscription"?
In early March, a "Bug" appeared in Ordinals, some inscriptions that had been successfully burned were not assigned a serial number value and could not be retrieved by the indexer. This error came to the attention and discussion of the community in April, and was initially called "Misprint typo" or "Orphan Inions Orphan Inscription". Subsequently, the core layer of the Ordinals protocol began to refer to these inscriptions as "Cursed Inions Cursed Inscriptions".
The reason for this error is that these "curse inscriptions" are not included as the first input in the burn transaction, and the Ordinals protocol only counts the inscriptions that are the first input in the burn transaction. According to Casey Rodarmor, the founder of the Ordinals protocol, in Issue #2045 of Ordinals Github, "cursed inscriptions" include the following types:
-One burning transaction contains multiple inscriptions
Inscription not entered as first in burn transaction
Multiple inscriptions exist on one Satoshi
-Unrecognized opcode was used when burning, such as OP_66
After Ordinals is upgraded to version v0.6.0, except for the "cursed inscription" in the case of "an unrecognizable opcode was used when burning, such as OP_66", all other types can be displayed on the official Ordinals browser. are searched, they are all given negative ordinal values. Since I noticed that many players used LooksOrdinal to burn "cursed inscriptions" before, here is a little mention. If you are using LooksOrdinal, you can rest assured that LooksOrdinal did not use OP_66 to create "cursed inscriptions".
Why doesn't it support the "cursed inscription" created by OP_66?
Even opcodes like OP_66 are not yet defined. According to @raphjaph, lead maintainer of the Ordinals protocol, even opcodes are currently not defined in order to keep the Ordinals protocol extensible. Therefore, if someone writes with an even opcode that has not been defined, the Ordinals protocol will not treat such a write as a valid write.
Casey Rodarmor, the founder of the Ordinals protocol, is also currently opposed to the OP_66 type "cursed inscription". He said that under normal circumstances, plans always change during development, and players should not take crazy Degen risks that they cannot afford before anything is settled. Of course, players can freely burn the "non-standard inscriptions" that were considered at the time at any point in time, and they will think that the Ordinals protocol will do something to make these "non-standard inscriptions" meaningful, and thus gain benefits. But it's important to keep in mind that the Ordinals protocol might not, either.
Currently, the OP_66 type "curse inscription" is in the "Unbound unbound" state, that is, from the perspective of the Ordinals protocol, this type of inscription is not bound to Satoshi. Therefore, the OP_66 type "Cursed Inscription" cannot be traded.
However, this does not mean that the OP_66 type "Cursed Inscription" has no turning point. The chief maintainer of the Ordinals protocol @raphjaph said that if there is enough reason to lift the "Unbound unbound" status of this type of inscription in the future, they will lift it. In short, the OP_66 type "Cursed Inscriptions" still has a glimmer of life. At present, the core layer of the Ordinals protocol does not intend to include this part of the "Cursed Inscriptions", but it is still open.
Conclusion
The solution to "Glyph of the Curse" is generally satisfactory. First, the existing inscription serial numbers were not destroyed, and reopening a series of negative serial numbers also avoided large-scale changes to the code. Secondly, the story of "cursed inscription" is also interesting enough. The core layer of the Ordinals protocol even uses the word "blessing" to describe the repair of errors, which is quite romantic. Most importantly, this bug fix is an extension of the Ordinals protocol. As Casey Rodarmor said, the support for multiple inscriptions per burning transaction can achieve efficient batch processing, and the support for multiple inscriptions on the same satoshi will make This improves efficiency by eliminating the need to check Satoshi's entire history to determine whether a new inscription is valid.
Next, various trading markets and wallets such as UniSat are expected to support "Cursed Inscription" soon, and "Cursed Inscription" may become the next hot spot of speculation. In particular, Casey Rodarmor said that his idea is to pre-announce a certain block height in the future. After this block, the "cursed inscription" generated by the previous situation will no longer be "cursed", and will be given a positive serial number value. However, there is another part of his thinking, that is, if there are "cursed inscriptions" generated by new situations in the future, the negative serial number value may still be expanded, and appropriate methods will be used to gradually return the "cursed inscriptions" to normal. So, from the perspective of hype, will "Cursed Inscription" be subdivided according to the situation in the future?
Finally, before UniSat and other wallets do not have the "Cursed Inscription" for adaptation, it is recommended not to operate as much as possible to prevent the "Cursed Inscription" from being spent as ordinary Satoshi. If you want to buy "Cursed Inscription" from the secondary market, please wait for each trading market to adapt before proceeding. Rational Degen, don't FOMO.
